A Cold December Weekend

An all new edition of the ABC 33/40 Weather Xtreme video is available in the player below. You can subscribe to the Weather Xtreme video on iTunes by clicking here.

COLD AND DRY: Temperatures over the weekend will average about 10 degrees below “normal” levels for early December in Alabama. Lots of sunshine each day; the high today will be in the 45 to 49 degree range; we warm into the low 50s tomorrow, but highs drop back into the mid to upper 40s Sunday with a fresh shot of cool air moving in from the north. We will be well below freezing each morning; colder valleys should reach the upper teens by daybreak tomorrow.

NEXT WEEK: We are still looking at good potential for a major rain event Tuesday afternoon and Tuesday night, with amounts of one to two inches statewide. The QPF hints at some 2.5 inch amounts to the south of here. The rain event is a high confidence one, but the amount of cold air following the system is very much in question. Our forecast for now is calling for sharply colder weather Wednesday, following the rain, but the 06Z GFS has come in with no phased upper air solution; it keeps the northern short wave separate and well to the north of here; if that is correct then the really cold air won’t make it here. We won’t bite on that just yet; let’s look at the 12Z run. I would not be surprised if the phased solution comes back in recent runs considering events in recent weeks. Lots of cold air out there, you know.

VOODOO LAND: Watch the end of the Weather Xtreme video and you will see the GFS North Atlantic Oscillation forecast continues to trend positive after December 15, and accordingly really cold air is nowhere to be found around here as we approach Christmas. Not good for those of you dreaming of a White Christmas. But, we all know this is voodoo. We will see…
