Today’s Lunch Dessert: Blackberry Cobbler for Blackberry Winter

| May 5, 2017 @ 1:27 pm

An unusually deep trough for early May extends into Alabama from the north early on this first Friday of the month. This will cause an unusually strong May cold snap for Alabama and much of the Ohio and Tennessee Valleys, and eventually the eastern United States. These late morning temperatures tell the story.

These readings are some 25-30 degrees below normal for early May!

We are at 51F at 1 p.m. at Birmingham, after reaching a high so far of 52. It that 52F were to hold, it would tied for the coldest May day on record in the Magic City! Clouds are hanging tough, and some light rain is moving into Birmingham as we speak:

Here are the coldest May 5 maximums in Birmingham history:

So, in short, a new record cool minimum is almost a certainty for Birmingham for today. And a tie of the all time record coldest May high temperature is not out of the question.

The upper level trough has cut off into an upper level low that is centered near Chattanooga this afternoon. This will keep the trough’s movement slow as it rotates into the Northeast tomorrow, keeping us in a strong northwesterly flow aloft that will have its origins over western Canada.

The surface low is over West Virginia (994 millibars). Your barometer at home is still very low, readings in teh 29.60s.

Lows tonight will look like this:

Most folks will be in the middle 40s, with some scattered 30s in the normally colder spots like Marion County and Jackson and DeKalb Counties of Northeast Alabama.

Clouds will hang tough overnight, the temperatures should be just warm enough and winds should remain in the 4-8 mph range, so frost shouldn’t be a problem.

Tomorrow will see highs in the lower to middle 70s southwest of US-280/I-22 with middle and upper 60s northeast.

A warming trend will begin tomorrow night, with lows into the 50s southwest and 40s northeast.

Showers will arrive Thursday night with a decent rain in store for Friday.
