Warm and Dry Much of Week Ahead

| May 14, 2017 @ 6:53 am

Central Alabama is waking up to clear skies on this Mother’s Day morning with a surface high pressure system centered over West Tennessee. Temperatures feel great this morning with readings in the lower 50s. And those temperatures feel just a tad cooler with low humidities thanks to dew points in lower 50s. The day will be filled by sunshine as the afternoon highs climb into the middle 80s.

The overall weather pattern for the next week will feature an upper level ridge that will help to warm the daily highs into the upper 80s and lower 90s. Many locations will nudge that 90-degree mark as we get a nice preview of summer. That same ridge that will bring those warm temperatures will also keep any traveling weather systems well away from the Southeast US. A fairly strong upper trough in the vicinity of the Four Corners area on Tuesday will eject out to the northeast on Wednesday and Thursday forcing the ridge to be suppressed a little, but limiting any fronts to reaching the Ohio River Valley.

Another strong upper trough digs into eastern Colorado by Friday, but the strong ridge over the Southeast US will also force that upper trough to kick out northeastward across the western Great Lakes by Sunday. The GFS is suggesting this upper trough may bring a front into the Southeast US by next Sunday, but as you might expect being that far out, the ECMWF and don’t agree with the ECMWF keeping any potential fronts west of the Mississippi River.

Looking out into voodoo country, the GFS does flatten the upper ridge over the eastern US by May 23rd with a nearly zonal pattern. A short-lived ridge comes back into the picture around May 26th. That is followed by a fairly strong trough digging toward the Southeast US around the 29th of May promising a round of wet weather. But we all know such a feature that far out could easily be gone on the next model run.

The Regions Tradition is returning to Greystone Golf & Country Club May 17-21 and tickets are now on sale. I had a great time Friday and Saturday working the amazing folks on the Buck Creek Festival committee. The 2017 version of the Festival was a big hit with a tremendous lineup of musical talent along with great weather that brought literally thousands of folks to the event. Mark you calendar for the Buck Creek Festival for next year on May 11 and 12, 2018! Special thanks to Bill Murray for handling the video duties yesterday so I could devote the day to the Buck Creek Festival. James Spann will return with the next Weather Xtreme Video on Monday morning. Happy Mother’s Day and Godspeed.
