WARM THROUGH SATURDAY: No real change in the weather through Saturday; Alabama will remain very mild and muggy with some morning fog and drizzle. No real significant rain; the best chance of showers each day will be over the far northern part of the state near the Tennessee border. Even though we generally not as warm as forecast today, we will still forecast highs tomorrow and Saturday in the 70 to 73 degree range, very close to record levels for late December in Alabama. We should see enough thin spots tomorrow and Saturday afternoon to get us up in the low 70s.

COLD AIR BLAST SUNDAY/MONDAY: A strong cold front will bring periods of rain to the state Saturday night; the 12Z GFS maintains the idea of the best rain coming from about 9:00 p.m. Saturday until 6:00 a.m. Sunday, so we will need to go ahead and adjust the forecast to reflect this. Sunday will be a very cold day, especially compared to the current warmth; the high will be only in the low 40s with an icy north wind; areas north of Birmingham most likely won’t get out of the 30s with wind chill index values below freezing all day.

Monday will be sunny, but cold. The GFS continues to print a low of 21 for Birmingham Monday morning; considering the vast snow and ice field to the north, don’t be shocked if we go lower than that. The high will be only in the low to mid 40s despite the return of sunshine.

CHRISTMAS WEEK: Another front will bring rain to the state Tuesday night into Wednesday morning, and Christmas Day still looks dry with seasonal temperatures (50s during the day following a morning low in the 30s).

VOODOO LAND: Still signs of a NAO flip to negative with a colder pattern for the eastern half of the nation in early January; we won’t know exactly how it will all develop at this time.
