An all new edition of the ABC 33/40 Weather Xtreme video is available in the player below, and on iTunes…

No real change in our thinking for the weekend. Here are the model output statistics for the weekend; these are forecast lows for Birmingham from the GFS:

Tomorrow morning 25
Sunday morning 22
Monday morning 29

Here are the forecast lows in our afternoon forecast package, written by the great Alabama weather legend, J.B. Elliott:

Tomorrow morning 26
Sunday morning 24
Monday morning 27

If we drop lower than 26 on any of the three mornings, that will break the record for the coldest April temperature on record in Birmingham; the current record of 26 was established on April 11, 1973.

The actual range will be from 20 to 32 on all three mornings, with the coldest readings in the valleys and protected areas, and the warmest temperatures on the ridgetops. Most likely, the coldest morning will be early Easter Sunday. The coldest places could be below freezing late tomorrow night and Sunday morning for 6 hours. This will be a damaging freeze, and commercial growers will have three sleepless nights ahead.

NEXT WEEK: The warming process finally begins Monday afternoon as the air begins to modify. The GFS shows a dynamic system at mid-week that will bring showers and storms late Tuesday night into Wednesday. If the air can become unstable, strong to severe thunderstorms will be possible.

LONG RANGE: Other good opportunities for rain show up around April 14 and April 16, and another sharp cold snap shows up in the April 17-18 time frame. The 12Z GFS suggests we might flirt with freezing again on one of those two mornings. Winter just doesn’t want to go away.

WEATHER PARTY: Get all the latest weather news over on our sister site, WeatherParty.com. Be sure and register while you are there; you can submit stories and vote on them to determine what is published on the front page.

Brian Peters will produce the Weather Xtreme videos over the weekend, and we will have updates on the record cold. My next video will be posted bright and early Monday morning at 7:00 a.m. Have a blessed Easter weekend!
