| January 10, 2009 @ 7:45 pm | 10 Replies

Things are quieting down just a bit now after an active late afternoon in Central Alabama.

ONE IMPORTANT TRAFFIC NOTE
John Talbot reports a major accident on I-459 near Liberty Park/Overton Road. 3 tractor trailer trucks involved. A possible fuel spill. Unconfirmed, but believe it is in southbound lanes.

The effective shear is marginal at best in the area north and northeast of Birmingham. That is why we saw that brief flare up over northern Jefferson County. The heaviest rain is approaching Ragland in St. Clair County.

The line extends from St. Clair County through northern Shelby into Bibb and Perry Counties. A significant weather alert is in effect for Calhoun, Shelby, St. Clair and Talladega counties.

CAPE is now non-existent. The strong forcing from the front is maintaining the line of showers/storms.

Only an occasional lightning flash.

Some brief heavy rains. Some reports…

0.20 in Bear Creek
0.59 in Jasper
0.32 in Hueytown

Winds gusted to 35 mph at the Birmingham Airport as the line passed.

In Sount Alabama, a severe thunderstorm warning is in effect for Monroe County, including the city of Monroeville.
