An all new edition of the ABC 33/40 Weather Xtreme video is available in the player below. You can subscribe to the Weather Xtreme video on iTunes by clicking here.

A COLD START: The colder spots have dropped down into the 10 to 15 degree range this morning… some 5:30 observations from our Skywatchers:

Scrougeout (Northeast Etowah County, northeast of Gadsden) 10
Sycamore 10
Hamilton 13
Coker 16

J.B. Elliott, the great Alabama weather legend, will run down a full list of lows later this morning.

WARMING UP: We will see progressively warmer weather through Friday; we expect a high today in the 40s; 50s tomorrow, and low 60s by Friday. In fact, the 00Z GFS is printing 66 for Birmingham on Friday. Sure sounds nice.

NEXT RAIN: The 06Z GFS is a little slower with our next rain event; it hints most of the rain will fall from about 3:00 a.m. until 3:00 p.m. Saturday. Still does not look like a major rain event; with amounts in the 1/4 inch range likely. The model is back on the idea of the surface boundary having enough southward push to reach Montgomery by Saturday night; if this is correct we figure Sunday will be dry and cool with a high around 50. I doubt if we see much sun Sunday, however.

NEXT WEEK: Watch the Weather Xtreme video and you can see how the 06Z GFS handles next week; it delays the rain event until the end of the week on Friday. I would not be surprised if future runs have the rain event back on Thursday at some point. Bottom line is that the first half of the week looks dry, with a decent chance of rain at some point during the latter half of the week.

VOODOO LAND: We continue to see hints of a decent rain event in the February 3-4 time frame, but no way to be specific at this point, or if there will be Arctic air involved. We will keep an eye on it.

TWITTER: Don’t forget, you can follow our news and weather updates from ABC 33/40 on Twitter here. And, my personal Twitter feed is here if you want to keep up with my adventures in life. Twitter is a short messaging service you can receive via the web, cell phone, or IM.

WEATHER BRAINS: Don’t forget you can listen to our weekly 30 minute netcast anytime on the web, or on iTunes. This is the show all about weather featuring many familiar voices, including our meteorologists here at ABC 33/40. You can even listen here on the blog; look for the player on the top left.

Busy today today… I will be doing weather programs at Oak Grove Elementary this morning, and at Brookwood Forest Elementary in Mountain Brook early this afternoon. I should be able to have the afternoon Weather Xtreme video loaded by 3:30. Enjoy the day!
