A Quick Check On Our Weather At 10:30 AM

| February 22, 2018 @ 10:36 am

A line of showers and thunderstorms are currently pushing through the northwestern quarter of the state at this point of your Thursday morning, some of the embedded storms are putting down heavy amounts of rainfall. A Flash Flood Warning is in effect for south-central Colbert County and western Franklin County until 11:00 AM today.

We are getting reports of water over the roadways in the north part of Florence, as they have received over 2.60 inches of rain since 3:00 AM this morning. There are other reports coming in of water on roadways in the Underwood-Petersville community and between Florence and St. Florian.

We’ll have to continue to watch this advancing line for the next couple of hours, especially for the heavy rainfall and wind gusts up to 40 MPH. Several Significant Weather Advisories were issued earlier this morning for the threat of winds in excess of 40 MPH. I doubt we’ll get a Severe Thunderstorm Warning out of this, but with thunderstorms in Alabama, expect the unexpected.

HRRR simulated radar valid through 4:00 AM Friday morning.

If the latest solution from the HRRR is correct, we could see some shower activity from this system as far south as Tuscaloosa, Birmingham, and maybe Clanton before the activity starts to dissipate and move back northward this afternoon and early evening. There is a decent amount of surface-based instability out ahead of this line, so thunder is definitely a possibility, and a few storms could become strong. Once again at this point, severe weather is not expected. If this rainfall does make it to Tuscaloosa and Birmingham, there might be a chance that record highs may not be reached today. Stay tuned! At this point, afternoon highs are forecast to make it into the upper 70s to the mid-80s throughout the area.
