A Little Cool But Really Nice Across Central Alabama At Midday

| April 5, 2018 @ 11:51 am

CONDITIONS ACROSS CENTRAL ALABAMA AT 11:50 AM

Other than a few higher clouds moving over and north of the Tennessee River in North Alabama, it’s a maximum sunshine day across the state. Temperatures at this time are ranging from the mid-50s in the north to the lower 60s in the south. Birmingham was sitting at 59 degrees.

WEATHER FOR THE REST OF YOUR THURSDAY

After having a rather chilly start this morning, I would say the temperatures will have recovered nicely this afternoon in Central Alabama. Skies will remain mainly clear throughout the rest of the afternoon and into the early evening hours. Highs will top out in the mid-60s to the lower 70s. Clouds will be on the increase later tonight and into the overnight hours, and I wouldn’t rule out a shower or two over the extreme northwestern parts of the area. Lows will be in the 40s.

A FEW SHOWERS POSSIBLE ON FRIDAY; STORMS ARRIVING LATE

A cold front will be making its approach to the state on Friday and that will bring a decent amount of cloud cover into Central Alabama for the daylight hours and may include a few scattered showers and maybe a clap or two of thunder. Much of the shower and storm activity should stay out of the area until after sunset, but activity will start to move in just after that point. There is a possibility of a few strong to severe storms over parts of the area, and those details are in the next section. Afternoon highs will top out in the mid-60s in the north to the lower 80s in the south.

STRONG TO SEVERE STORMS POSSIBLE FRIDAY NIGHT INTO SATURDAY MORNING

The latest Day 2 Severe Weather Outlook from the Storm Prediction Center has a good portion of the western half of Central Alabama defined in a Marginal Risk for severe storms for Friday night and into Saturday morning. At this point this appears to be a low instability/high shear event with damaging winds up to 60 MPH as the main threat. The tornado threat will be very low with this event, but not zero… so a brief spin-up tornado or two is possible. The highest probability for any strong to severe storms will be south of a line from Demopolis to Clanton to Alexander City. North of that line, the threat will be less but cannot be ruled out. The good news is that this system doesn’t look to be as impressive as the one that moved through just a couple of nights ago, but I wouldn’t be surprised if these risk levels are extended a little farther east by Friday morning.

This will be a linear event, and the window for strong to severe storms in Central Alabama will start around 10:00 PM Friday and should end around 8:00 AM Saturday. Roughly west of a line from Demopolis to Montevallo to Jacksonville, the possibility of strong storms will be from 10:00 PM to 4:00 AM, while east of that line will be from 2:00 AM to 8:00 AM.
