Here is a quick look at the Alabama Weather Situation at 1:15 p.m.

A large mass of rain is pushing across the eastern half of Mississippi and into western Alabama early this afternoon along a surface convergence zone ahead of a broad surface low over Arkansas and Louisiana.

Rain is increasing from Marion and Lamar counties southward through much of the state west of I-65. There is no lightning in this activity. This rain shield will overspread much of the state over the next few hours.

Heavier rain has begun in Tuscaloosa and will last about 20 minutes with moderate rain continuing after that for a couple of hours.

In Birmingham, heavier rain is affecting the western sections of the county, and light to moderate rain will continue over the Metro for the next 2-3 hours.

The dominant surface low is now located just south of Jackson, MS. The warm front is located along the back edge of the precipitation extending across eastern Mississippi and western Alabama.

There is a tornado warning for a storm southeast of Jackson MS at this hour. It is moving in the general direction of Forest, Lake and Newton along I-20.

More storms will form in the warm sector of the low as it tracks northeastward into Northwest Alabama this evening. These storms will have instabilities in the 500-1,000 joules/kg range, which is sufficient for severe storms, along and south of our severe weather threat line from Tuscaloosa to Clanton to Auburn. Also, they will have enhanced low level helicity, so a few brief tornadoes could occur. Damaging winds will also be a threat.

Heavy rain will be a threat, with 2-3 inches of rain expected across the northern half of Alabama. !-2 inch amounts will fall to the south.

A wind advisory is in effect for areas north and northeast of Birmingham, Winds are averaging 8-16 mph with gusts to 20-25 mph at this time. They will get stronger as the afternoon progresses.

Stay tuned to the latest information throughout the afternoon and tonight. Have a way of receiving warnings wherever you are. We will have continuous updates here on the blog.
