National Hurricane Preparedness Week: Day 2 – Develop An Evacuation Plan

| May 7, 2018 @ 5:02 am

In today’s post for the National Hurricane Preparedness Week, the National Weather Service wants you to find out if you live in a storm surge hurricane evacuation zone or if you’re in a home that would be unsafe during a hurricane. If you are, figure out where you’d go and how you’d get there if told to evacuate. You do not need to travel hundreds of miles. Identify someone, perhaps a friend or relative who doesn’t live in a zone or unsafe home, and work it out with them to use their home as your evacuation destination. Be sure to account for your pets, as most local shelters do not permit them. Put the plan in writing for you and those you care about.

The evacuation zones for the state of Alabama are located in Mobile and Baldwin counties. This information will be good to have when you are vacationing along the white sandy beaches of Alabama during the summer months. For more information on evacuation zones, please visit 2018 Evacuation Zones site at Flash.org.

For a complete list of important contact information for the extreme southern counties of the state, along with helpful evacuation information and local radio stations, please visit the NOAA Extreme Weather Information Sheet for southern Alabama.
