At Midday, The Heat Is On… And It Looks Like It’s Only Going To Get Hotter

| May 10, 2018 @ 11:48 am

Other than a few thin wispy clouds floating overhead in the western and northwestern parts of the area, we are enjoying mainly clear skies with very warm temperatures at 11:35 AM on this fine Thursday. Temperatures are currently reading in the lower 80s in the north to the upper 80s in the south. Birmingham was sitting at 86 degrees, while the warm spot is Eufaula at 87 degrees. Haleyville and Cullman are tied as the cool spots both at 82 degrees.

For the remainder of the afternoon and early evening hours, we’ll continue to have mostly clear to partly cloudy skies, with a very small chance of isolated showers or thunderstorms mainly over the northeastern quadrant of Central Alabama (east of I-65 and north of I-20). The above HRRR Simulated Radar animation goes through now until midnight tonight which shows a few showers are possible mainly during the 1:00 PM – 7:00 PM time frame, with any showers quickly dissipating after sunset. Afternoon highs will top out in the upper 80s to the lower 90s from north to south throughout the area, which in my book can be classified as HOT. Tonight will feature mainly clear skies and mild temperatures, with overnight lows dipping down into the upper 50s to the mid-60s.

Friday’s weather will be much of the same…mostly sunny skies and hot, with only a very small chance of an isolated shower or storm mainly in the northeastern parts of Central Alabama. Afternoon highs will top out once again in the upper 80s to the lower 90s, with another decent night and lows in the lower to mid-60s. Feels like summertime has arrived early.

Just taking a quick peek into the temperatures over the next 10 days including today for the city of Birmingham, and it looks like there will not be any cooldown until Wednesday, when highs settles back down into the 80s. Looks like Sunday will be the hottest day of the period, with the high topping out at 93 degrees. Highs throughout the area on Sunday will be in the lower to mid-90s. The relief on Wednesday will come in the form of more clouds and some showers, thanks to a trough that will be lifting northward from the Gulf of Mexico.
