Stay Cool Out There

| May 12, 2018 @ 11:49 am

A few cumulus clouds in the sky this afternoon, but for the most part we are seeing tons of sun and hot temperatures highlighting the forecast for the weekend.

At midday, temperatures are well into the 80s.

No threat of rain to provide heat relief as afternoon highs today for most spots in Central Alabama will reach into the 90s, with lower and perhaps some mid 90s tomorrow. This is definitely the hottest weekend in Central Alabama so far in 2018.

USA BRIEF: The SPC is forecasting an Enhanced Risk of severe weather for parts of  WV, PA, MD, NJ and DE today. Severe thunderstorms with damaging winds will be the main threat, but some tornadoes are also possible. A Slight Risk is forecast for a long swath of the Mid-Atlantic and Lower Great Lakes, stretching from northern IL to DC to the NJ/DE coasts.

RAIN WILL RETURN: Monday will be another dry day with ample sunshine, but a broad low in the Gulf of Mexico will move up into the Florida Panhandle Tuesday, and will pull deep tropical moisture into the state. A few periods of rain are likely Tuesday and Wednesday. With the clouds and rain, highs drop back into the low 80s. The low will slowly dissipate over Alabama late in the week, but showers will remain possible Thursday and Friday.

No risk of severe storms, and rain amounts Tuesday through Friday should be fairly close to one inch for most Alabama communities, with some spots closer to two inches, which is needed as it has been very dry lately.

RED AIRGLOW OVER THE ATACAMA DESERT: Last night, the normally dark skies of Chile’s Atacama Desert lit up with rippling bands of red light. It looked like the aurora borealis, but it was not. A photographer recorded the unusual apparition of red airglow, so bright that it outshined parts of the Milky Way.
