Chilly/Damp Lunch Hour

| March 13, 2009 @ 10:45 am | Reply

At midday, it was cloudy with temperatures in the upper 40s across North/Central Alabama with intermittent light rain and brisk winds. If you are sleepy as you head for lunch, this outdoor briskness will bring you back to life.

The cold front that we have been talking about for several days pushed all the way down to the Gulf Coast. A low-pressure area was developing along that front over the NW Gulf of Mexico. The stalled front extends eastward from that low to near the New Orleans/Biloxi/Mobile/Tallahassee/Jacksonville line.

Warmer air has reclaimed part of SE Alabama. Late this morning, it was 73 in Ozark and Troy, 67 in Montgomery, but in the low 40s over extreme NW Alabama. To the west, moderate to heavy rain was falling through part of Central Mississippi into North and Central Louisiana. Some light sleet was reported in West/Central Louisiana. In Mississippi, Jackson and Vicksburg were reporting heavy rain with 44 degrees.

RADAR UPDATE
Mostly light rain continues across North/Central Alabama as noon approached. Most of the rain was in the Tuscaloosa/Hamilton/Birmingham/Gadsden area. To the west, heavier rain was over NE and Central Mississippi and also over North Louisiana. Some of the heavier rain was approaching West Alabama’s Marion, Lamar and Pickens Counties. Radar estimates show that 1/2 inch of rain has fallen over part of Mississippi. There is no lightning in this rain area, but there were some thunderstorms over Central Texas, but the lightning activity was decreasing.

We expect much of Alabama to get a good soaking in the next 24 to 48 hours. Places like Birmingham could get over 2 inches.
