Strong Storms Continue Moving Southeast Across North Alabama; Severe Storms Possible This Afternoon

| June 1, 2018 @ 11:27 am

Radar Check At 11:25 AM
A line of strong thunderstorms continue to move to the southeast through the northern parts of the state. The good news is that these are below severe limits, but these are putting down heavy amounts of rain and dangerous cloud-to-ground lightning. The strongest storm at this point was located over southeastern Lawrence and southwestern Morgan counties. Gusty winds up to and possibly over 30 MPH is possible with this storm. All of these are moving to the southeast at 25 MPH.

These storms that are currently over the northern parts of the state will lay down a surface boundary that will be the catalyst for strong to severe thunderstorms during the afternoon hours. Damaging winds up to 70 MPH and hail up to golf ball size will be possible, along with heavy rain and dangerous cloud-to-ground lightning. Development of those storms will be completely random and impossible to give an estimate time of arrival or location on where these will occur.

Already getting damage reports from Lauderdale County when the line passed through earlier this morning, as trees and power lined were downed in the Waterloo community in a few locations.

SPC continues an Enhanced Risk of severe storms for the northern half of Central Alabama with a Slight Risk surrounding it. Timing for strong to severe storms will be from now until approximately 8:00 PM tonight.

Afternoon highs will be in the upper 80s to the lower 90s throughout the area, with rain likely for the northern half of Central Alabama. Chances decrease as you move southward of a line from Tuscaloosa to Alexander City, but the southern half of the area has a chance of showers and storms as well (30-40%). A few showers could linger into the late night hours, but most of the activity will have diminished by 10:00 PM. Overnight lows will be in the upper 60s to the lower 70s.

We’ll keep you posted throughout the day.
