Time for a Cool Change; Scattered Strong Storms First

| June 3, 2018 @ 10:57 am

A beautiful early Sune Sunday morning is doing its thing across Central Alabama this morning. Skies are mostly sunny, temperatures are warming through the 80s and radars are clear for now. it is humid, however, with dewpoints in the lower and middle 70s.

OUr cold front is over Northwest Alabama at this hour, with a pre-frontal trough across Central Alabama.

The airmass south of the front is unstable, with CAPE values increasing. There is plenty of moisture.

The question now is whether storms will be widespread in coverage. Certainly, scattered storms will form ahead of the front, primarily south of I-20. The storms that do form will have the potential to produce damaging wind gusts. And there will be plenty of lightning and heavy rain as well.

Highs this afternoon will be near 90F.

The winds of change will be felt tonight, as drier and cooler air moves in.

Lows tonight will look like this: 58F in Hamilton, 63F in Birmingham, 62F in Alex City, even 68F in Montgomery. Nice.

FOR MONDAY: Sunny, dry and less humid conditions with highs in the middle 80s. Refreshing!

REST OF THE WEEK: Central Alabama stays rain free through Friday, which isn’t necessarily a good thing. Soils are wet for now, but five days of dryness, sunshine and low humidity will quickly dry them out. Highs will be in the middle and upper 80s through Wednesday, with lows in the lower 60s. Dewpoints will be in the 50s through early Wednesday. Humidities will creep back up by Thursday as the high-pressure center slides to the East Coast and our moisture flow returns from the Gulf of Mexico.

By the weekend, highs will be near 90F and lows near 70F. Scattered showers and storms will return by Saturday as another front tries to sag into North Alabama.

TROPICS: We will be watching for tropical storm development that could possibly occur by late next weekend over the northwestern Caribbean, possibly moving into the eastern Gulf of Mexico.
