Getting A Little Steamy Out There For This Early Friday Afternoon
CONDITIONS AT 1:45 PM
We have quite a few scattered showers and thunderstorms out there on the edges of Central Alabama with the exception of the northern edge of the area. Temperatures at this point are running in the upper 80s in the north to the mid-90s in the south, with the hot spot being Eufaula at 94 degrees. Birmingham was at 90 degrees.
AIR QUALITY ALERT
A “code orange” air quality alert has been issued for the Birmingham metropolitan area (Jefferson and Shelby counties) today due to the potential of ground level ozone. This mostly impacts those with respiratory issues.
WEATHER FOR THE REST OF YOUR FRIDAY
It will continue to be partly cloudy and hot throughout Central Alabama with a small chance of a isolated to scattered afternoon and early evening showers and thunderstorms. Highs will be quite steamy up in the lower to mid-90s. Those isolated shower and thunderstorm chances will continue into the late night and overnight hours, while we’ll have partly cloudy skies. Overnight lows will be in the mid-60s to the lower 70s.
SCATTERED SHOWERS AND STORMS RETURN FOR THE WEEKEND
Humidity levels will continue to increase throughout the weekend, and combined with the hot temperatures already in place, this will bring an increase to our scattered shower and thunderstorm chances. Saturday will have about a 30% chance of any one spot getting a shower or storm, while chances increase to near 50% on Sunday. Each day will start off with a good supply of sunshine but clouds will increase during the day with the daytime heating. Highs will be in the lower 90s for the most part on both days throughout the area. Looks like we have made a return to the typical June pattern for Central Alabama after having a very nice week with lower humidity levels.
TROPICAL UPDATE
The Atlantic Ocean, Gulf of Mexico, and Caribbean Sea all continue to be pretty quiet at this point, and the National Hurricane Center continues to show that there is no tropical depression or storm development expected within the next 5 days. The GFS continues to show a tropical system invading the Gulf Coast on late next week, while the more trustworthy European model continues to keep the area quiet. We’ll keep an eye on the situation.
