A Quick Check On Our Weather At 7:20 PM

| July 21, 2018 @ 7:21 pm

AT 7:05 PM – We still have severe thunderstorms affecting the extreme southeastern parts of Central Alabama, mainly in portions of Lee and Russell counties. These storms are moving to the southeast at 20-25 MPH and has the threat for damaging winds up to 60 MPH, large hail of 1-inch in diameter or larger, and a brief tornado.

As we have seen earlier, we can’t put our guard down with these storms as we have had a possible tornado touchdown in Lee County about an hour ago, along with storms producing severe hail from golf ball size to baseball size. We probably have about another 2 hours to deal with these storms as they slowly move southeastward.

We do have a few damage reports coming in from Lee County, including trees and power lines down along with some damage to an apartment complex close to Opelika. This damage has been confirmed by Lee County EMA. There are more structures damaged by the apparent tornado near Opelika which also has been confirmed by the Lee County EMA.

The rest of North and Central Alabama is relatively quiet with a couple of isolated showers showing up in southeastern Walker County near Cordova, Sumiton, and Dora.

Once we get these storms out of the southeastern parts of Central Alabama, I believe that are severe storms chances will be over for the evening and NWS Birmingham should start trimming counties out of the Severe Thunderstorm Watch.

At this point, the Severe Thunderstorm Watch continues until 1:00 AM Sunday for Barbour, Bullock, Calhoun, Chambers, Cherokee, Clay, Cleburne, Coosa, Elmore, Lee, Macon, Randolph, Russell, Talladega, and Tallapoosa counties.
