Hot & Humid With Showers Firing Up: It’s Your Midday Nowcast For Central Alabama

| July 30, 2018 @ 12:06 pm

CONDITIONS AT 12:00 PM ACROSS CENTRAL ALABAMA
We have scattered showers and storms that have already popped up mainly over the western and northwestern parts of Central Alabama, with a few more just east of I-65 and down of the southeastern parts of the area along and south of I-85. Nothing strong, but a few are putting down some heavy rain and some cloud-to-ground lightning. All of these are pushing off to the northeast rather slowly. Much of the rest or the area has mostly clear to partly cloudy skies. Temperatures are in the mid-80s to the lower 90s already, with Tuscaloosa topping the list at 90 degrees. Birmingham was sitting at 87 degrees.

WEATHER FOR THE REST OF YOUR MONDAY
We’ll continue to have hot and very humid conditions across Central Alabama through the remainder of the afternoon and early evening hours, with scattered showers and storms continuing to form with the heating of the day. Coverage of those showers and storms will possibly be highest south of the I-85 corridor in the southeastern parts of the area. North of that, the chance of rain for any one location will be just over 40%. Afternoon highs should top out in the lower to mid-90s across the area, but may stay a little cooler if rain affects your location prior to the mid-afternoon hours. Rain chances will diminish somewhat for locations east of the I-59 and I-59/20 corridors for tonight, but a few showers are still possible. West of that, rain chances remain higher as scattered showers and storms are expected to move in from the west during the overnight hours. Lows will be down in the lower to mid-70s.

WHILE TEMPERATURES COOL OFF, RAIN COVERAGE GOES UP ON TUESDAY
We’ll have a few impulses of energy move down the trough into Central Alabama on Tuesday, bringing a increased risk of showers and thunderstorms to the area. While those increase, we’ll have enough instability for storms to persist, but shear will be very low which will keep the severe risk out of the forecast. With the cloud cover and rain coverage, high temperatures will be held back into the lower to mid-80s for much of the area, with upper 80s in the extreme southeastern parts of the area. Chance of rain for any one spot will be in the 60-70% range.

AN UPDATE ON THE TROPICS
For the next 5 days, the North Atlantic, Caribbean Sea, and the Gulf of Mexico is expected to be free from any tropical development.

ON THIS DAY IN WEATHER HISTORY
1979 – A forty-minute hailstorm bombed Fort Collins, CO, with baseball to softball size hail. Two thousand homes and 2500 automobiles were damaged, and about 25 persons were injured, mainly when hit on the head by the huge stones. A three-month-old baby died later of injuries.
