An Early Afternoon Look at Alabama’s Weather

| August 5, 2018 @ 1:38 pm

It has been a warm and muggy Sunday across Alabama. Morning readings in the lower 70s across Central Alabama have given way to temperatures mostly in the 90s by 1 p.m. Moisture levels are fairly moderate by August standards. Dewpoints are in the lower 70s, so it seems quite humid.

High pressure both at the surface and aloft is in charge of Alabama’s weather.

A few locations in the Tennessee Valley may flirt with the middle 90s by mid-afternoon. It has been pretty easy to reach the convective temperature of 85F, and convection was forming over Northeast Alabama by noon, where the best moisture is. High pressure will be increasing and moisture levels will be lowering through the afternoon.

Despite the early onset of the activity, showers and storms will be hard to come by this afternoon. If you are lucky enough to get under one of the showers, you will appreciate the cooler temperatures and outflow wind, but watch out for the lightning, which can be deadly.

Things will calm quickly after sunset, and lows will drift back into the lower and middle 70s.

Tomorrow will be another mainly dry day, and so will Tuesday, but the second half of the week promises to be on the wet side.
