Plenty Of Sun & Already Hot: It’s Your Midday Nowcast For Central Alabama

| August 13, 2018 @ 11:46 am

CONDITIONS AT 11:45 AM: A good bit of sunshine is currently shining down on Central Alabama at this point before the noon hour, with only a few clouds over the southwestern parts of the area. Radar is free of any rain for the most part, with the exception of a small shower over the southwestern parts of Sumter County. Temperatures are running in the 80s throughout the area, with Birmingham being the only reporting station at 90 degrees.

WEATHER FOR THE REMAINDER OF YOUR MONDAY: Drier air will continue to be pulled into the east and northeastern parts of the area, keeping those locations dry. More moist and unstable air will preside over the west and southwestern parts of the area, leading to a chance of isolated to scattered showers and thunderstorms roughly south of a line from Hamilton to Birmingham to Auburn. Afternoon highs will be in the lower 90s with a few locations briefly touching the mid-90s. Rain chances south of that line will range from 20-50% from north to south. Any shower or storm activity should quiet down by nightfall across most of the area with only a slight chance of a shower or two lingering mainly in the southern parts of the area. Lows will be down in the mid-60s to the lower 70s.

MUCH OF THE SAME STORY FOR TUESDAY: The skinny ridging zone moves a little farther eastward into the area, lowering the rain chances for much of the northern half of the area, while scattered showers and storms will be a little more possible south of a line from roughly Demopolis to Clanton to Phenix City. Skies will be mostly clear to start but becoming partly cloudy by the afternoon, with highs topping out in the lower 90s. Rain chances will be 20% or less north of that line, while rain chances will be 30-40% south of that line.

LOOK BEFORE YOU LOCK: Never leave children, disabled or elderly adults, or pets in parked vehicles. Studies have shown that the temperature inside a parked vehicle can rapidly rise to a dangerous level for children, pets, and even adults. Leaving the windows slightly open does not significantly decrease the heating rate. The effects can be more severe on children because their bodies have not developed the ability to efficiently regulate internal temperature. Heat-related deaths are preventable, so look before you lock.

A LOOK AT THE TROPICS: A low-pressure center located around 600 miles south-southeast of Cape Race, Newfoundland. It will be no threat to the U.S. Mainland, and the NHC is only giving it a 20% chance of formation throughout the next 5 days. The rest of the Atlantic Basin is quiet at this time.

ON THIS DAY IN WEATHER HISTORY: 1831 – A blue sun was widely observed in the southern states. The phenomena were believed to have pre-staged Nat Turner’s slave uprising.
