A Rather Nice Afternoon Outside: It’s The Midday Nowcast For Central Alabama

| August 22, 2018 @ 1:14 pm

WEATHER CHECK AT 1:15 PM
We have partly cloudy skies across Central Alabama at this point on our Wednesday afternoon, but the good news is that we have lower humidity levels making feel not-so-bad outside. Temperatures are in the lower to the mid-80s for the northern half of the area, with mid to upper 80s for the southern half.

CONDITIONS FOR THE REST OF YOUR WEDNESDAY
We’ll continue to have mostly clear to partly cloudy skies throughout Central Alabama with more comfortable conditions, especially for late August. Even though highs will top out in the mid to upper 80s, the lower humidity values across the area will make today more tolerable. For tonight, we’ll have mostly clear skies throughout the area with cooler temperatures. Lows will range from the lower 60s in the north to the upper 60s in the south. Enjoy it while you can. We don’t get these types of days often in the summertime.

ANOTHER COMFORTABLE DAY ON THURSDAY
Tomorrow will be another day with plenty of drier air over the area, leading to much lower humidity values and to another comfortable day. Skies will be mostly clear and afternoon highs will be in the mid to upper 80s. Tomorrow night will remain mostly clear and lows will be in the lower to upper 60s once again.

LOOK BEFORE YOU LOCK
Never leave children, disabled or elderly adults, or pets in parked vehicles. Studies have shown that the temperature inside a parked vehicle can rapidly rise to a dangerous level for children, pets, and even adults. Leaving the windows slightly open does not significantly decrease the heating rate. The effects can be more severe on children because their bodies have not developed the ability to efficiently regulate internal temperature. Heat-related deaths are preventable, so look before you lock.

A LOOK AT THE TROPICS
All is quiet at this point, and nothing is expected to form in the Atlantic Ocean, the Caribbean Sea, of the Gulf of Mexico within the next 5 days. As far as out in the Pacific, all eyes are on the Hawaiian Islands as Category 4 Hurricane Lane is making an approach. Maximum sustained winds were up to 155 MPH as of the latest update and the forecast track has Lane moving just offshore along the west side of the islands and gradually weakening through the next few days. Hurricane watches and warnings are up for the islands and tropical storm force winds and very heavy tropical rains can be expected to start later today.

ON THIS DAY IN WEATHER HISTORY
1992 – Hurricane Andrew makes landfall in Southern Florida as a Category 5 storm with wind guests estimated in excess of 175 m.p.h. Estimated damages exceeded $20 billion, more than 60 people were killed and approximately 2 million people were evacuated from their homes.
