Showers and Storms Becoming Numerous Across North Central, Northwest Alabama

| September 9, 2018 @ 1:07 pm

Showers and thunderstorms have become numerous early this afternoon across parts of North and Central Alabama.

One area of storms extends from Madison and Morgan counties in North Alabama, down through Cullman, Walker and into northern Tuscaloosa and Pickens Counties. These heaviest storms were east of Cullman, east of Jasper and near Carrollton. These storms will move into Marshall, Blount and northern Jefferson Counties over the next hour.

They could affect the City of Birmingham later.

Lightning, gusty winds and brief heavy rains will be the main impacts.

The storms are developing ahead of an approaching trough and cold front that will settle down into Central Alabama over the next 24 hours, stalling there and keeping our rain chances higher than normal into midweek. Showers will continue into the overnight hours and will be around Monday morning as well under cloudy skies. Lows tonight will be in the lower 70s. Highs Monday will be limited to the 80-82F range with the clouds and showers. Areas southeast of Birmingham will see storms tomorrow afternoon, ahead of the front. Nothing especially strong or severe, however.

We’re keeping a close eye on the tropics, including the threat of a historic hurricane on the East Coast, but no threats to the beautiful beaches of Alabama and Northwest Florida for the foreseeable future.
