At Later Than Midday, It’s Mostly Cloudy And Mild

| October 23, 2018 @ 1:45 pm

CONDITIONS ACROSS CENTRAL ALABAMA PRIOR TO 1:30 PM

For much of Central Alabama just prior to 1:30 PM, we have a good bit of cloud cover streaming in from the southwest. There are some breaks in the clouds in the southern portions of the area, while some thinner spots are allowing for a little brighter skies in the northern half. Temperatures are ranging from the mid-60s to the lower 70s, with the warm spot currently being Troy at 72 degrees. The cool spot was Haleyville at 64 degrees. Birmingham was sitting at 68 degrees.

Even with the cloud cover, we will stay dry throughout the remainder of today and through the late night and overnight hours. Skies will eventually start to clear out some late tonight and we’ll end up with mostly clear skies for the overnight hours. Afternoon highs will top out in the upper 60s to the lower 70s, with lows in the lower 40s to the lower 50s.

WEATHER FOR YOUR WEDNESDAY
The day will start off with partly cloudy skies, but some of the cloud coverage will dissipate some, leaving us with mostly clear skies by the afternoon. Highs will be a little warmer topping out in the upper 60s to the mid-70s. Cloud cover will move back in from the southwest as the ghost of Hurricane Willa will be working its way toward the Central Gulf Coast after making it across Mexico. We will continue to stay dry during the late night and overnight hours and lows will fall into the upper 40s to the mid-50s.

CHECKING THE TROPICS

For now, everything is quiet across the Gulf of Mexico, Caribbean Sea, and the Atlantic Ocean, but we may see some tropical or subtropical development as a broad low is forecast to form in the next few days several hundred miles to the east-northeast of the Leeward Islands. It is expected to meander over the Central Atlantic for a while and is currently only given a 20% chance of tropical cyclone formation within the next 5 days.

Hurricane Willa is still packing a punch with maximum sustained winds at 120 MPH and is located just off of the western Mexican coast. Landfall should occur within the next few hours, and once it does, rapid weakening will begin. It will move northeast and will cross over into southern Texas just after sunset tomorrow evening as a depression. What is left of Willa will move over the Gulf of Mexico hugging the coastline and will bring rain to Central Alabama on Thursday and Friday.
