Tropical Action Next Week?

Unfortunately, the short term still looks dry for Alabama. We really see no significant chance of rain for the next seven days, with mostly sunny warm days and clear pleasant nights. A wedge of cooler air will try to slip in here from the east, so afternoon highs will probably drop a few degrees by Wednesday and Thursday, but the most noticeable effects will be close to the Georgia border.

MEMORIAL DAY WEEKEND: Still no reason to forecast any significant chance of rain across the Deep South. Great weather for a beach getaway, or just having fun in the back yard. Highs will remain in the 80s Saturday through Monday.

NEXT WEEK: Things get interesting as the 12Z GFS is back on the Gulf of Mexico tropical storm bandwagon. It develops a system near the Yucatan channel on Memorial Day (Monday May 28); then it takes it northeast to near Tampa Bay on Thursday May 31. This, of course, is pure voodoo this far in advance, but the model has been pretty persistent in developing a tropical system in that region for a number of days. Should the track to Tampa be correct, then most of the rain will remain east and south of Alabama, unfortunately. But, should this tropical storm come up toward Mobile, Pensacola, or even Fort Walton Beach, we should get a very good wet down. All we can do at this point is wait and watch.
