Cloudy & Cool At Midday, Nice On Saturday, Severe Storms Late Monday

| November 2, 2018 @ 12:39 pm

Much of Central Alabama is blanketed with a good bit of cloud cover as we have reached the midday hour, but we do see clearing starting to take place over the extreme western parts of the area. We do have a few spotty areas of very light showers or sprinkles showing up on radar over the east-central parts of the area, while the rest of Central Alabama appears to be dry. Temperatures are still rather cool at midday, with the upper 40s to the mid-50s for the northern half of the area, and the mid-50s to the lower 60s in the south. Birmingham was sitting at 48 degrees, tied as the cool spot with Haleyville, while the warm spot was Eufaula at 63 degrees.

WEATHER FOR THE REST OF YOUR FRIDAY
While we may have a few spotty light showers or sprinkles possible over the eastern parts of the area for a few more hours, we’ll continue to have mostly cloudy skies for much of Central Alabama. Skies will continue to slowly clear from the west and may take until the overnight hours before all of Central Alabama will have mostly clear skies. Afternoon highs will be in the mid-50s to the lower 60s, with overnight lows in the upper 30s to the mid-40s.

It will be a great night to grab some hot chocolate or coffee from the concession stands at your local high school football games, as temperatures at kickoff will be in the upper 40s to the lower 50s, and falling into the mid to the upper 40s by the final whistle. No rain expected and skies will continue to clear.

SATURDAY’S WEATHER
The good news is that we warm back up on Saturday with plenty of sunshine. It will be a great day to spend time with the family outdoors or go catch a local college football game. Skies will be clear and afternoon highs will top out in the mid-60s to the lower 70s. Saturday night will be another very cool night with clear skies and lows dropping into the 40s across the area.

THREAT OF SEVERE WEATHER LATE MONDAY INTO TUESDAY
Our next major storm system is forecast to move across the area on late Monday into Tuesday morning with all modes of severe weather possible: damaging winds, large hail, and tornadoes. Severe storms are likely to develop along a cold front that looks to push into North and Central Alabama late on Monday night and exits the area by the early afternoon hours on Tuesday. Shear and instability values, along with a strong upper jet, will be sufficient enough for the threat of damaging winds, tornadoes, and large hail. NWS Birmingham says this has the potential to become a significant severe weather event.

Go ahead and get ready for the event. Have fresh batteries in your NOAA WeatherRadio and in your flashlights, have a designated safe place ready to go and have a readiness kit in your safe place (including helmets for everyone, hard-soled shoes, and portable air horns), and have your smartphones fully charged before the storms arrive in your neighborhood. We’ll have updates on the blog today and through the weekend on this developing weather situation.
