A Quiet May Morning

An all new edition of the ABC 33/40 Weather Xtreme video is available in the player below, and on iTunes…

How about those rogue showers yesterday! They formed on an easterly wave, on the nose of the wedge; a large percentage of the state remained dry, but a few lucky spots got wet. Our SKYCAM site in downtown Clanton measured 0.43″, while the great Alabama weather legend, J.B. Elliott, reported 0.36″ at his place in Northeast Trussville. At the ABC 33/40 studio in Riverchase, we received about 7 drops. Not many people griping about that kind of a missed forecast; a nice shower in the middle of a drought that came out of nowhere.

MOVING ON: Water vapor satellite images show drier air moving into Alabama from the east, so don’t look for a repeat today. We will maintain a dry forecast through the Memorial Day weekend, with temperatures today and tomorrow just a few degrees “cooler”. Highs will be in the low to mid 80s instead of the mid to upper 80s. Warmer afternoons will return over the weekend, however.

NEXT WEEK: Getting more confident that scattered showers and storms will return to Alabama over the latter half of next week as deeper moisture moves into the state from the south. The GFS continues to hint at rather nervous conditions across the far southern Gulf of Mexico as well; the 00Z run did not develop a tightly wound tropical storm, but it moved a broad low toward the Florida peninsula. One way or another, it sure looks like much of Florida (at least the peninsula) will have a good chance at some really beneficial rain in about one week to help their wildfire situation.

LONG RANGE: The 00Z GFS shows a full latitude upper trough in the June 4-6 time frame over the eastern U.S… this would suggest a good rain event for Alabama followed by cooler air. But, this is pure voodoo and don’t be shocked if that feature disappears on the next run.

WEATHER BRAINS: Don’t forget you can listen to our weekly 30 minute netcast anytime on the web, or on iTunes. This is the show all about weather hosted by David Black and featuring many familiar voices, including our meteorologists here at ABC 33/40.

WEATHER PARTY: Get all the latest weather news over on our sister site, WeatherParty.com. Be sure and register while you are there; you can submit stories and vote on them to determine what is published on the front page.

Look for the next Weather Xtreme video posted by 3:30 this afternoon… after that I will be headed for Regions Park (formerly known as the Hoover Met) where I will be doing the 5:00 and 6:00 weather segments from the SEC Baseball Tournament. Sure looks like some great weather for all those games out there through the weekend…
