Warm is the Word

The weather in a word is warm. The record high at the Birmingham airport today is 88 set way back in 1896, and we’ve forecasting a high to be right on that mark. Moisture increasing Sunday and into next week will curb the heat a tad but we’re still experiencing a bit of a summer 2009 preview.

Not a lot of need for a long discussion today. The surface high over the Southeast US coast together with an upper ridge centered over that same location will keep the weather systems to our west and northwest for the next several days. Severe weather and some hefty five-day rainfall totals of 5 to 7 inches will occur from the Red River Valley northeastward toward Chicago.

The ridge breaks down on Wednesday allowing a cold front to settled into the Tennessee River Valley bringing with it a chance of showers especially from Birmingham northward. That front stays put early Thursday but migrates back north late Thursday as the ridge builds back into the Southeast late next week. That should bring Central Alabama another summer-like weekend for the first weekend of May.

The GFS is suggesting an east coast trough out into voodoo land which could bring some rain chances along with slightly cooler weather. But there is lots of time for that to change.

Don’t forget to listen to our weekly netcast anytime on the web or on iTunes. This is the show all about weather featuring many familiar voices including our meteorologists here at ABC 33/40. You can even listen here on the blog; look for the player on the top left.

And you can follow news and weather updates from ABC 33/40 on Twitter here. And, my personal Twitter feed is here if you want to keep up with the adventures and mis-adventures in my life. Twitter is a short messaging service you can receive via the web, cell phone, or IM.

I hope you have a great weekend. With the warm weather we can always get outside and do a bit of yard work, or just lounge in the hammock in the shade. I prefer the hammock!!! With some lemonade! And a gentle push to sway the hammock! Godspeed.
