At Midday: Rain In The East, Dry In The West… More To Come

| December 14, 2018 @ 12:34 pm

Conditions Across Central Alabama At 12:30 PM: The big low-pressure center that is currently located over Louisiana continues to pump moisture up into Central Alabama from the Gulf of Mexico, allowing for a good bit of rain to fall over the eastern half of the area at this point. Currently, the rain shield stretches from Double Springs to Tarrant to Talladega Springs and over to Auburn. West of those locations, a good dry slot has worked into the area, but I expect more shower activity to move in later today. Temperatures are in the lower 50s to the mid-60s across the area from north to south. Birmingham was at 57 degrees.

Weather For The Rest Of Your Friday: Looking at the latest run of the HRRR model for this afternoon through the evening and overnight hours (shown above), showers and a few spots of heavier rain will continue to move through Central Alabama for a little while before we see a decrease in activity from the southwest to the northeast. This evening, we may have another flare-up of showers and maybe a few claps of thunder, but by midnight, much of the activity will have come to an end. There may be a few isolated light showers wrap around the low and affect parts of Central Alabama during the overnight hours, but those chances will only range from 30% to 50% from southwest to northeast. When it is not raining, skies will be cloudy. Afternoon highs will be in the upper 50s to the upper 60s across the area from north to south, with lows in the mid to upper 40s.

Pesky Lingering Showers Continue Through Saturday: As the center of low pressure continues to work northeastward across the southeastern United States, it will pass over the northern parts of the state. While we will not see as much rain on Saturday as we are seeing today, we’ll continue to have a small shower chance in the forecast for much of the area. Rain chances will be highest in the north, ranging from 20% to 40% from south to north. It will be another gloomy-looking day with all clouds and no sun with afternoon highs dipping back into the lower to mid-50s. Rain chances finally start to come to an end during the overnight hours, but a shower or two are still possible during the evening mainly north of the I-20 corridor. Overnight lows will be in the lower to mid-40s.

Sunday Will Be Dry But Cool: With the low well off to our northeast up in the Virginias, we’ll finally get a chance to dry out for a good little while starting on Sunday. Skies will start off cloudy in the morning, but some clearing will occur and we could see a mix of clouds and sun by the late afternoon hours. Afternoon highs will top out in the mid to upper 50s.
