Storms Pushing Into Western and Northwestern Alabama

| December 27, 2018 @ 2:10 pm

As we approach the 2:00 pm hour in Central Alabama, the line of storms is now pushing across the Alabama/Mississippi state line. Heavy rain and thunderstorms are now affecting the western parts of the state from Lauderdale County in the north to Sumter County in the southwestern parts of Central Alabama.

A couple of these storms within the line are strong, but no severe weather is currently occurring in Alabama. No severe weather watches are in effect for the state as well, but a couple of Significant Weather Advisories have been issued for the treat of winds up to 50 MPH. Those storms were moving through parts of Colbert, Franklin, Lauderdale, Lawrence, and Limestone counties, along with another stronger storm moving through Greene and Sumter counties. Some hail was reported in Livingston at 1:41 pm just east of exit 17 of I-59/20.

This will be the first of a long stretch featuring heavy rains and gusty winds. As you can see, there is still plenty of activity back off to the southwest that will move in this direction through the rest of the day and into the first several hours on Friday.

Nothing has changed with the severe weather risks as far as the outlooks from the Storm Prediction Center. A Marginal Risk for severe storms continues for the extreme west and southwestern parts of the area through tonight and into early tomorrow morning. A Marginal Risk continues for the east and southeastern parts of the area on the Day 2 Outlook throughout the day on Friday. The overall threat for severe storms is small for the defined areas, with isolated damaging wind gusts and a much smaller risk of a brief spin-up tornado or two along the main line.

Flash Flood Watches continue for all of the North Alabama counties until 9:00 am Friday morning, and for nearly all of the Central Alabama counties until 6:00 pm Friday evening.

A Wind Advisory continues for all of North and much of Central Alabama through 12:00 am Friday.

We’ll continue to keep you posted throughout the day.
