Alabama Weather Update at 10:15 p.m.: Significant Tornado Parameter Values Increasing Over West Alabama

| April 13, 2019 @ 10:11 pm

Here is an update on the Alabama Weather Situation at 10:00 p.m.

A dynamic storm system is beginning to impact Alabama tonight and there is a threat of severe weather threat through the overnight hours and into Sunday morning.

At this hour, a surface low is northeast of Greenville MS with a cold front surging eastward through Central Mississippi. This is happening because the upper trough is beginning to become negatively tilted. A warm front lies along the Alabama/Tennessee border.

The damaging wind threat will increase as the forcing associated with the cold front runs into the storms over eastern Mississippi.

Surface winds over North and Central Alabama are backed to the southeast, indicating that a tornado threat still remains.

The low-level jet will be increasing over the next several hours over the western counties of Alabama, increasing the deep layer shear and transporting in warm, moist air that will increase the instability and overcome the nighttime inversion that has set in.

At this hour, we are tracking two tornadic storms, one passing south of Starville. It will head toward Lamar and Marion Counties in West Alabama.

The second is moving toward Meridian. This storm will affect Meridian before moving into Sumter, Greene and perhaps Pickens Counties in West Alabama. The temperature and dew point at Meridian are 77F/68F, which is indicative of really juicy air.

Significant Tornado Parameter Values are over 2 over eastern Mississippi and western Alabama south of Fayette and Walker Counties. They are now over 3 along the border counties.

Stay up to date on this developing situation throughout the night. Tornado watches now cover western Alabama from the Tennessee border to the Gulf of Mexico. Have a way to receive warnings even if you are asleep. Be ready to go to your safe place before the storms arrive.
