Most Neighborhoods Stay Dry Today
An all new edition of the ABC 33/40 Weather Xtreme video is available in the player below, and on iTunes…
Let me encourage you to read my post about summer weather forecasting in Alabama; even if you have been here for all your life a quick review of the situation is good as we get deeper into the hot season.
Just about all of the state should be dry today in the wake of a weak short wave that moved over the state yesterday; that produced a few scattered showers over North and East Alabama; there was actually some hail in a few spots. But, as usual, most communities remained dry. We will be up in the low 90s this afternoon; we might even see a few mid 90s over the western third of the state with the dry soil in place.
While we stay dry, a major storm system will bring a significant chance of severe thunderstorms and a few tornadoes to the high plains today, where a moderate risk of severe weather is in place. That storm will lift northeast into Canada tomorrow, but once again severe storms are likely over the Upper Midwest; a moderate severe weather risk is up tomorrow from north of Kansas City to around Green Bay.
The trailing front from that departing storm will sag southward into Tennessee by Friday, and there is a chance that just might enhance the number of scattered showers and storms around here by Friday afternoon or Friday night, especially over the Tennessee Valley of extreme North Alabama. The front will dissipate around the Alabama/Tennessee border over the weekend, but just maybe a little low level convergence from that will bring a little better coverage of afternoon showers and storms on Saturday.
Other than that, pretty routine summer weather continues into next week with no major, widespread rain event expected as the drought continues. Your only hope for rain will be to snag an afternoon shower or thunderstorm. And, those things can be really frustrating. You might hear thunder, and see a rain shaft, but not a drop falls at your place.
TROPICS: The Atlantic basin remains quiet and tropical storm formation is not expected through the rest of this week.
WEATHER PARTY: Get all the latest weather news over on our sister site, WeatherParty.com. Be sure and register while you are there; you can submit stories and vote on them to determine what is published on the front page.

I am enjoying this week with all the kids at the Double Oak Community Church Vacation Bible School; next week it is on to Summer Quest at Hunter Street Baptist Church. The next Weather Xtreme video will be posted by 3:30 this afternoon!
