A Quick Late Afternoon Update… MCS Has Formed And Headed This Way

| June 21, 2019 @ 4:21 pm

The MCS that the models showed forming and moving into North and Central Alabama has formed and is currently moving south-southeastward through southern of Missouri, southern Illinois, and southwestern Indiana. On its current path, it will swing through nearly all of North Alabama and much of the northwestern half of Central Alabama. At its present speed, it should be crossing over the AL/TN state line somewhere in the 8:00 pm to 9:00 pm time frame. The HRRR has it moving in a little later, around midnight.

There are several severe thunderstorm warnings currently issued for the stronger cells located on the leading edge. The good news is that by the time it makes its way into the area, it will have entered the ridge in place over us… meaning that the MCS will begin to lose strength as it moves through the area.

With that being said, SPC continues a Marginal Risk for severe storms throughout the remainder of the day and through the overnight hours for all of North Alabama and most of Central Alabama with the exception of the southwestern parts of the area. Damaging winds up to 60 MPH will be the main risk with the MCS, but we can also expect heavy rain with the leading edge of the system along with dangerous cloud-to-ground lightning.

The HRRR has the MCS weakening rather quickly and falling apart over the I-20 corridor around 3:00 am, and nearly completely diminished by 4:00 am.

Other than that, nearly all of Central Alabama is dry and hot at the moment, with the only shower showing up on radar is currently over the southeast corner of Macon County and moving into Russell County.
