WELCOME TO JUNE: Today is the beginning of the 2009 Atlantic hurricane season; things are quiet at this time and tropical storm formation is not expected through mid-week. The season runs through the last day of November, and most of the major tropical systems are seen in August and September, when the SSTs are peaking.

LOW 90S TODAY: Yesterday’s official high in Birmingham was 89; we figure we will beat that by a few degrees today, with a high up in the low 90s, making today the hottest so far this year. The GFS is printing 91 today, while the NAM shows 93. Let’s split the difference and say 92. Dry air means lots of sunshine and no significant chance of rain other than some rogue shower somewhere. Pretty much the same situation tomorrow.

REST OF THE WEEK: We will bring in the chance of a few scattered showers and storms Wednesday afternoon, but it looks like Thursday will offer the best chance of showers and storms this week, thanks to an upper trough passing through and a nice flow of moisture from the south. Look for scattered to numerous showers and storms Thursday, and a high back in the low 80s. The showers should thin out Friday as the trough moves on to the east.

WEEKEND PEEK: At first glance, this weekend looks just like the one we enjoyed. Mostly sunny days with highs in the upper 80s, possibly touching 90 in spots.

LONG RANGE: No sign of any really anomalous weather through mid-June; we are getting into that time of the year when the weather tends to be very warm and muggy with some risk of a passing shower or storm most afternoons.

WEATHER BRAINS: Don’t forget you can listen to our weekly 30 minute netcast anytime on the web, or on iTunes. This is the show all about weather featuring many familiar voices, including our meteorologists here at ABC 33/40. You can even listen here on the blog; look for the player on the top left. We recorded this week’s show last night; look for the show notes shortly.

We have hundreds of kids signed up, but there is always room for one more. Look for the next Weather Xtreme video here by 3:30 this afternoon… enjoy the day!
