Heavy Thunderstorms Continue Across Northwest Alabama

| July 17, 2019 @ 9:44 am

At 9:30 am, radar continues to show a large mass of rain and thunderstorms pushing across the northwestern and northern parts of Central Alabama and the west and central parts of North Alabama. The mass is slowly moving eastward at around 25 MPH.

Flash Flood Warnings remain in effect for parts of Lauderdale, Colbert, Franklin, and Lawrence counties in North Alabama.

An Areal Flood Advisory remains in effect for parts of Marion County in Central Alabama until 11:00 am this morning.

With the persistence of these thunderstorms and the available energy that is present ahead, we could see some flash flooding issues eastward. Conditions are favorable for some back building of storms to occur so some places that have already received plenty of rainfall from these storms may see more develop and move through.

With the precipitable water values at or exceeding 2 inches today, rain rates with these storms could reach as high as 2 inches per hour or more.

The highest chances of rain and storms will be along and north of the I-20 corridor throughout the day, but a few isolated to scattered showers may pop up with the heating of the day over the southern parts of the area.

Remember, if you are driving and come across a street that is flooded… TURN AROUND, DON’T DROWN.
