Dorian’s Pressure Drops to 955 Millibars as it Continues to Become Better Organized

| September 4, 2019 @ 9:17 pm

The Air Force recon plane just getting on station in Hurricane Dorian just found a central pressure of 956 millibars. And that probably was not the exact center since the sonde splashed with winds of 11 knots. The NHC estimated the minimum central pressure at 955 millibars.

If Dorian makes landfall at 958 mb, it would be the 8th strongest landfalling hurricane in North Carolina history. I will work on a complete list.

The pressure continues to drop in the storm. It is over the warm waters of the Gulfstream and wind shear continues to be low.

The eye is closed and elliptical in shape, 55 by 45 nautical miles. It is more distinct. The cloud tops around the center are getting colder, indicting stronger convection.

Maximum surface winds were estimated at 104 mph. Maximum flight level winds were 136 mph. The 9 p.m. tropical cyclone update listed the max sustained winds still at 110 mph.

Hilton Head recently reported a wind gust to 47 mph.
