RIGHT NOW: We do have some convection in progress over North Alabama, but so far the storms are widely spaced, and the most organized activity is to the north where a new tornado watch is up for much of Southeast Missouri, and western and middle Tennessee. SPC, however, maintains a slight risk of severe weather for about the northern third of Alabama for this evening as very unstable air covers the region. We note surface based CAPE values are up to 4,500 j/kg around Memphis, with a general maximum right down the U.S. 78/I-22 corridor to Birmingham. Don’t be surprised if more healthy storms form in this general area over the next few hours. See the Weather Xtreme video for more details and the graphics.

REST OF THE WEEK: Hot weather will headline the forecast for the rest of the week as we head for the mid 90s each afternoon. Dewpoints will remain fairly high, and the daily heat index will peak around 100 degrees. Welcome to summer in Alabama. Understand an afternoon storm is possible must about every summer day during the heat of the afternoon, but they should be fewer in number tomorrow as the upper ridge builds, and most communities will be dry Wednesday through Friday as the storms become very isolated.

WEEKEND PEEK: A strong short wave passing north of Alabama will beat the ridge down somewhat over the weekend, allowing a surface boundary to creep in here. This should mean decreasing heat levels (highs over the weekend should be closer to 90), along with an increase in the chance of scattered showers and storms on Saturday and Sunday. No wash-out, but we will have to dodge a few storms, which is not too unusual for mid to late June around here.

THE LAND OF VOODOO: Still no sign of any tropical issues, and it looks like rain and temperatures will be pretty close to average during the last week of June with your standard 5880 meter 500 mb ridge over Alabama.

I enjoyed seeing a big crowd of teachers this morning at the AMSTI summer workshop at Hayden High School… they are giving up two weeks of their summer training on math/science issues that will help them when school gets cranked up in August. A number of similar workshops are going on across the state.

Look for the next Weather Xtreme video here by 7:00 a.m. tomorrow!
