A Few Notes on the Heat on a Record Setting Afternoon

| October 1, 2019 @ 1:45 pm

1 p.m. observations

The current heatwave across Alabama is quite remarkable. We are in the process of re-writing the record books across North and Central parts of the state.

Based on the five-minute observations, Birmingham has reached 99F this afternoon. The hourly observations have reached 97F. We will have to see what goes down as the official high later today, but it appears that we have broken the record for the date, and established a new all-time record high for October in the Magic City. It is still possible that Birmingham will hit 100F (although the 1:25 observation fell back to 97F). If it does hit the century mark, it will obviously make it the latest 100 degree reading on record.

Huntsville reached 97F at 1 p.m., establishing a new all-time high for October there as well.

Muscle Shoals hit 99F at 1:20. If this stands, it will be the new all-time record high for that station. Based on hourly observations, they have hit at least 97F, which would their the all-time record, which is 97F, set on October 3, 1903.
