RIGHT NOW: A severe thunderstorm watch covers a large part of our neighboring state of Georgia right now as big storms are moving southward down the I-75 corridor. Seems like the bulk of the organized storms will stay east of Alabama through tonight, but one or two could creep over the line and impact counties like Jackson and DeKalb in the northeastern corner of our state.

REST OF THE WEEK: With the heat ridge drifting west, that opens the door for some risk of at least widely scattered showers and storms across Alabama on a daily basis for the rest of the week. Also, with a northerly flow aloft, we will have to watch for organized thunderstorm areas to the north. As you know, there is very little skill in forecasting a derecho or MCS type event until we actually see them on radar. Otherwise, the hot muggy weather continues, with highs mostly in the 90 to 94 degree range. We might even have a day with highs in the upper 80s late this week if we see storms forming early enough in the afternoon.

WEEKEND PEEK: For now, we see nothing out of the ordinary for late June; highs in the low 90s, partly sunny hot, and humid days, and some risk of scattered, mostly afternoon and evening showers and thunderstorms. That routine summer pattern will probably hold into early July.

TROPICS: A disturbance in the Southwest Gulf of Mexico continues to become a little better organized, but it is drifting west and should move into Mexico during the next 24 hours with little chance of major development. And, over on the Pacific coast side of Mexico, tropical storm Andres could briefly become a hurricane tonight as it touches the coast; it will then turn westward by mid-week and weaker over cooler water. See the Weather Xtreme video for all of the graphics and details.

WEATHER BRAINS: Don’t forget you can listen to our weekly 30 minute netcast anytime on the web, or on iTunes. This is the show all about weather featuring many familiar voices, including our meteorologists here at ABC 33/40. You can even listen here on the blog; look for the player on the top left. Tonight’s new show will focus on the Georgia Dome tornado during the 2008 SEC Basketball tournament… we will have a guest from the SEC on the show with us. Should be very interesting; it will be posted by 10:30 or so on the web and iTunes.
