Front Moving Northeast

A clear discontinuity is moving northeastward across Alabama tonight. I guess that it is technically a warm front. Really it is more like a moisture front, separating drier, more stable air to the nrotheast with dew points in the 50s, from moist, more unstable, tropical air to the southwest.

It is visible on radar as a broken line of showers and storms that extends from Marion County in Northwest Alabama to near Double Springs in Winston County to southwest of Cullman to northern Jefferson County near Gardendale to eastern Birmingham, to Rockford in Coosa County and on to Montgomery.

The dewpoint at Tuscaloosa has jumped to 70F.

A severe thunderstorm warning remains in effect for Marion County until 830 p.m. A very strong thunderstorm covers northwestern Marion County at this hour. Much to the chagrin of our friends in Hamilton, it is just to the west of them. Very heavy rain, frequent deadly lightning and strong winds are associated with the storm. Seek substantial shelter as it approaches. It will be moving into Franklin County shortly.

This invasion of moisture is setting the stage for an active weather day across Alabama tomorrow. As a trough approaches, it will make the tropical airmass unstable, allowing for widespread showers and thunderstorms…we hope….
