Quick Check on Alabama Weather
Things are calming down after an active afternoon and evening. But the stage is being set for our best rain chances in quite a while…
The only warning is a severe thunderstorm warning for Lauderdale County in the Northwest corner of the state…it expires at 9:45. That storm has weakened substantially.
Moderate to heavy rain covers the Northwest corner of the state.
A weakening band of showers is lifting northeast across West Central Alabama.
Some folks have been fretting that the event is over or that storms to our south are going to cut off moisture and rob us of or rain event. Not to worry. The trough is back over Arkansas and Louisiana. The airmass over Alabama is becoming quite juicy now, with 70 degree dewpoints from Columbus MS to between Birmingham and Tuscaloosa to near Calera to Montgomery and points south and west. As the trough approaches, colder air aloft associated with it will overspread the warm, moist air leading to increasing instability. With nothing to cap the atmosphere, widespread showers and storms should develop and move across the area.
Precipitable water amounts in the atmosphere are projected to be in the two inch range, which means some areas could get heavy rainfall. Evening QPF maps from the HPC forecast one half to one inch rainfall amounts over average across Alabama, with a max over south central Alabama of about 1.25 inches. I won’t be surprised if areas that see persistent storms get more. Let’s hope…
Updated forecast will be out shortly…and we will keep you updated throughout the day tomorrow and tonight if necessary.
