TD 19/Gulf Coast Impact

| September 11, 2020 @ 4:43 pm

Tropical Depression Nineteen has formed near the Bahamas; it is headed for the Gulf of Mexico.

The latest forecast track brings it to tropical storm strength Sunday, and keeps the system below hurricane strength until the time of landfall next week. As you look at tracking maps, keep in mind a tropical storm is not a “dot on a map”… the rain shield and impact can extend pretty far from the center.

GULF COAST IMPACT: The system will bring the threat of heavy rain to the Central Gulf Coast Sunday, Monday, and possibly part of the day Tuesday. Storm Surge, Tropical Storm or Hurricane Watches could be issued later tonight and tomorrow. Rain amounts of 3-5 inches are likely along the coast from Gulf Shores to Panama City Beach Sunday through Tuesday.

Also, dangerous rip currents are likely; expect red or double red flags on the coast Sunday through Tuesday. A few isolated waterspouts or brief tornadoes can’t be ruled out in the bands wrapping into the center of the tropical storm.

The weather improves along the Gulf Coast Wednesday through Friday with the usual mix of sun and scattered storms.

INLAND ALABAMA IMPACT: The impact across North and Central Alabama is not as certain; it depends on the size and intensity of the tropical system in the Gulf. Rain chances will likely increase Monday and Tuesday as deeper tropical moisture is pulled northward. Rain amounts of 1-2 inches seem likely; possibly heavier in spots over the western side of the state.

As always, keep a close eye on forecast updates over the weekend.
