HAPPY LABOR DAY: I know most folks are away from their computer screen today, but we do our best to crank out a Weather Xtreme video every holiday since a number of you are interested in the world of weather, and how it impacts Alabama and the Deep South.

THIS WEEK: After recovering from a badly busted forecast Saturday, we really don’t see much in the way of excitement this week. Light winds aloft, weak surface wind fields, no major features that would produce positive vertical velocity. But, a moist airmass than just hangs around for the next seven days. So, the forecast won’t change much through the weekend; occasionally cloudy each day with some risk of showers, mostly during the afternoon and evening, but with the chance of late night or morning shower along the way.

Events like the widespread rain Saturday are caused by mesoscale features, often than can’t be identified more than a few hours in advance, and there is no way we can really pick out a day right now with the best coverage of rain based on the synoptic scale maps. MOS guidance looks too warm; I figure highs will be mostly in the mid 80s this week, with lows in the 60s.

THE WEEKEND: Watch the Weather Xtreme video and you won’t see much change over the weekend; there will be a chance of showers Saturday and Sunday, but for now nothing shows up to suggest a wash-out, or anything really heavy. Highs stay in the mid 80s.

TROPICS: The best candidate on the board to become Tropical Storm Fred is the system in the far East Atlantic, but it will turn north over the open water, and should not be a threat to any land area. A low along the middle Atlantic coast of the U.S. will bring wind and rain to the upper Atlantic coast by mid-week, but this is not a classic warm core tropical system.

WEATHER BRAINS: Don’t forget you can listen to our weekly 30 minute netcast anytime on the web, or on iTunes. This is the show all about weather featuring many familiar voices, including our meteorologists here at ABC 33/40. You can even listen here on the blog; look for the player on the top left. We will record a new show tonight; it will be posted around 10:30.
