Sunday Early Afternoon Update: Severe Storms Possible Tonight

| May 2, 2021 @ 1:18 pm

There is a mix of sun and clouds on this Sunday afternoon across Alabama.  The clouds are most prominent over western sections.

Temperatures are in the 70s almost exclusively, although Demopolis has reached 80F. Anniston had reached 81 with increased sunshine.

Dew points are slowly coming up, rising through the 50s, but a surge of moisture is coming later today and tonight behind a northeast bound warm front.

A cluster of showers is over southern Coosa and Autauga Counties in South Central Alabama. But the main showers with some thunder are over southern Mississippi. These showers are going to move across Central Alabama later this afternoon. They are not expected to be severe.

An upper-level disturbance currently over eastern Oklahoma and western Arkansas has closed off into an upper low. This disturbance will trigger another round of showers and storms later this afternoon and evening over Mississippi. These storms will push into western Alabama by late afternoon. These storms could become severe in the warm, moist, and unstable airmass behind the warm front. Damaging winds and hail will be the main threats, although we can’t rule out the possibility of a tornado.

There may be two additional rounds of storms tonight. The first will be a continuation of the first round over Northwest Alabama. These storms carry the possibility of damaging winds and hail as well. The tornado threat is tiny with these storms. The final round will come from storms that spread into Southwest Alabama after midnight. These storms will affect parts of Central Alabama after midnight. These storms will last into Monday morning. They could also cause some damaging winds and hail.

The threat window is from 4 p.m. until 2 a.m.

The storms will continue tomorrow, although severe weather is not expected at this time.

Storms on Tuesday, however, could become severe again. Stay tuned.
