Watching The Radar

An all new edition of the ABC 33/40 Weather Xtreme video is available in the player below. You can subscribe to the Weather Xtreme video on iTunes by clicking here.

RIGHT NOW: The good news is that the radar is not nearly as active as recent days; seems like warmer temperatures aloft are beginning to help in reducing the overall coverage and intensity of showers and storms. Some of the heaviest rain at mid-afternoon is over on the western side of the state, closer to the deep upper trough over the central U.S. Not much happening over East Alabama, or Georgia, which is very good news for our friends in Atlanta who are still recovering from flooding yesterday.

TOMORROW THROUGH FRIDAY: The weather will be warm and humid with a mix of sun and clouds and highs in the mid to upper 80s. Scattered showers and storms are possible, mainly during the afternoon, with the most numerous ones most likely over the western third of the state. Sure won’t feel like fall (which arrives this afternoon at 4:18 p.m. local time).

THE WEEKEND: We still expect an increase in the number of showers and thunderstorms on Saturday as the upper trough lifts out and passes just north of Alabama. SPC has the northern half of the state in a severe weather risk, so it could be a day with the dual threat of severe storms and flash flooding. Then, drier air tries to nose into North Alabama Sunday, with the deeper moisture shifting down into South Alabama by midday.

NEXT WEEK: The 12Z GFS shows a secondary front passing through here Monday, with some potential for a few showers. This is followed by a nice surge of cooler and drier air by Tuesday. Sure looks like some great weather Tuesday through Thursday of next week with sunny days, clear nights, cool mornings, and low humidity. Something to look forward to.

HOW WET? It has rained in Birmingham on 16 of the first 21 days of September, and we have had measurable rain for the past 9 consecutive days. The rain total for the month is 9.50″. We do need a break.

TROPICS: All remains quiet across the vast Atlantic basin, and tropical storm formation is not expected through the rest of the week.

WEATHER BRAINS: Don’t forget you can listen to our weekly 30 minute netcast anytime on the web, or on iTunes.
