Fascinating weather over the next few days thanks to a double frontal pattern.

For today, a front with a long line of showers including isolated thunderstorms embedded within the line or just ahead of the line had advanced to the northwest corner of Alabama this morning. This first front will be advancing steadily across Alabama during the next 24-hours or so. A flash flood watch was posted for much of Central and North Alabama due to the potential for heavy rain and the impact that would have due to our saturated soil. Many flash flood deaths occur in vehicles, so if you plan to be out and about today, keep this risk in mind and do not attempt to travel through areas where water covers the roadway to an unknown depth.

Clouds and rain will keep temperatures in check, so I expect to see highs ranging from mid and upper 70s in primarily western sections to lower 80s in the eastern sections.

Sunday we should become dry as the front sweeps eastward. But the cooler and drier air will not arrive until Monday with the second front. The second front is expected to be rain-free, however, we will see some clouds. We should begin to see humidity values drop on Monday with the really dry air in place by Tuesday. By Tuesday and Wednesday some spots could see lows dropping into the 40s. Daytime highs with the dry air will be very, very pleasant as readings only reach peak values in the 70s.

The week remains dry through Friday with another strong wave dragging a front through here by late Friday and Saturday. At the moment, this does not appear to be a big rain event.

Voodoo country begins to see the pattern flatten our with a big Omega block in place over the western half of the country. However, a strong zonal flow will undercut the Omega block with embedded short waves in the flow. This could mean a day or two with rain even though October is our driest month.

SPC is outlooking a small area for a slight risk of severe weather centered on southern Illinois. For us, the main threat will come from the moisture laden air mass and isolated thunderstorms with the potential for locally heavy rain and flash flooding.

Tropics remain unusually quiet with only one tropical depression on the boards and that one is a long, long way from land and expected to remain in the Central Atlantic.

Big day in Helena with Jammin’ at the Junction. This is free concert (donations accepted) in honor of Larry Childers who died earlier this year. Bo Bice dreamed up the idea of a benefit concert and will be appearing at 9 pm tonight. Larry’s wife, Joy, asked me to emcee the event, so I will be at Helena’s amphitheater park for much of the day. I hope you can come down and enjoy the festivities. All donations will benefit local charities that Larry embraced. But whatever your plans, enjoy the day and godspeed.
