NOT SUMMER ANYMORE: Sure, we all know we will have more warm days in October, but the long hot summer is indeed over. You will really feel it tonight with lows down in the 45 to 50 degree range. The coldest valleys across North Alabama will be close to 40 by daybreak tomorrow. Cool, crisp, refreshing fall weather.

TOMORROW AND THURSDAY: More fine weather on these days with a sunny sky and a high in the mid 70s tomorrow, followed by upper 70s on Thursday. While we enjoy the dry conditions, our eye will be on the middle of the nation, where a few severe storms could form tomorrow afternoon. A more significant severe weather threat is ahead for Thursday in the broad area from Jackson and Memphis to Omaha; looks like SPC might be considering a moderate risk for places like Tulsa and Fort Smith.

FRIDAY: The vigorous upper trough responsible for the severe weather to the west on Thursday will bring a round of showers and storms into Alabama on Friday. We will be watching for strong storms, although at this moment SPC does not have our state in a severe weather outlook. It looks like a line of showers and storms will move through rather quickly during the day, with the main chance of rain between 6:00 a.m. and 6:00 p.m. Sure looks like the rain will be over in time for the high school football games Friday night. Rain amounts of 1/2 inch are likely, with isolated amounts to one inch.

OUR WEEKEND: Looks very nice, with sunny mild days and clear cool nights Saturday and Sunday. Highs in the 70s, lows between 47 and 52.

FOOTBALL WEATHER: Both Alabama and Auburn are on the road this weekend, so here is an early look. For the Auburn/Tennessee game at Neyland Stadium Saturday evening (6:45 p.m. kickoff), the sky should be mostly fair with a kickoff temperature of 68 degrees, dropping to near 60 by the end of the game. Alabama plays Kentucky at Lexington (11:30 a.m. kickoff)… the sky will be cloudy with just an outside risk of a shower during the game. Kickoff temperature near 63 degrees, then hovering in the low to mid 60s through the game.

NEXT WEEK: Monday looks dry, but the 12Z GFS hints at some risk of showers over the northern half of Alabama on Tuesday, and possibly Wednesday.

TROPICS: All is quiet across the Atlantic basin.

BIG SHAKER: A powerful earthquake with a magnitude of up to 8.3 struck off the South Pacific island nation of Samoa about two hours ago, triggering a tsunami as coastal residents fled to higher ground. The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center said waves 1.57 meters (five feet) tall hit American Samoa, while 0.7 meter waves were recorded in Samoa.
