Flood Warnings, Advisories This Morning

A large west to east oriented band of moderate to heavy rain is entering the Birmingham Metro area from the south this morning.

It has already rained 1-3 inches across parts of Shelby County, where rainfall rates have been approaching 1.5-2 inches per hour. 1.5 inches of rain fell in 40 minutes at the NWS Office in Calera.

In East Alabama. heavy rain has been falling across parts of Chambers and Lee Counties, where a flash flood warning is in effect until 11:15 a.m.

A flood advisory is in effect for Jefferson County and Shelby County as well. Heavy rain will be impacting the rush hour in Birmingham.

The National Weather Service in Birmingham has issued a

* Flash Flood Warning for…
Central Shelby County in central Alabama…

* Until 930 AM CDT.

* At 625 AM CDT, local law enforcement reported thunderstorms
producing heavy rain across the warned area. Between 2 and 2.5
inches of rain have fallen. The expected rainfall rate is 1.5 to 2
inches in 1 hour. Additional rainfall amounts of 1 to 3 inches are
possible in the warned area. Flash flooding is ongoing or expected
to begin shortly.

HAZARD…Flash flooding caused by thunderstorms.

SOURCE…Law enforcement reported.

IMPACT…Flash flooding of small creeks and streams, urban
areas, highways, streets and underpasses as well as
other poor drainage and low-lying areas.

Hoover, Alabaster, Pelham, Helena, Calera, Chelsea, Montevallo,
Columbiana, Wilsonville, Indian Springs Village, Oak Mountain
State Park, Oak Mountain Amphitheater, Shelby County Airport,
Riverchase, Meadowbrook, Inverness, Highland Lakes, Fowler Lake,
Maylene and Mount Laurel.

PRECAUTIONARY/PREPAREDNESS ACTIONS…

Turn around, don’t drown when encountering flooded roads. Most flood
deaths occur in vehicles.
