I-59 Rains

| October 10, 2009 @ 7:07 am | Reply

Folks traveling on I-59 between Meridian and Chattanooga this morning may think it is raining everywhere in Alabama. They would have their windshield wipers on the entire trip. Really it is just within about 30 miles either side of that interstate.

Our initial cold front is over South Alabama this morning. A secondary front has settled to near I-59, thus the rain. This front has become parallel to the upper flow, so it has slowed. A 50-60 mile wide conveyor belt of rain extends all the way back to Baton Rouge, Louisiana.

If the front doesn’t move very much, it could be a wet day for places like Tuscaloosa, Birmingham, Gadsden and Fort Payne.

Today’s highs in the upper 60s to near 70 will feel quite chilly compared to yesterday’s upper 80s. The high of 88F at Anniston yesterday was a record for the date, breaking the old record established in 1993. Birmingham and Tuscaloosa both came within two degrees of their record highs for the date.
