Chilly this morning and widespread frost expected on Monday morning as the surface high settles over Alabama allowing our wind to go completely calm. The NWS has a Frost Watch in effect for tonight and Monday morning.

The chill is the big story as we will be staying dry until later in the week. The chill continues today with highs only in the 50s though some spots could push the 60-degree mark a bit. It will feel nice with the brilliant sunshine. Clear skies tonight will pave the way for great radiational cooling and the occurrence of widespread frost and low temperatures down into the middle 30s. Those normally colder spots will definitely push the freezing mark as Pinson did this morning tying a record low of 32.

As the surface high slides eastward we’ll see a gradual warming trend through the middle of the week with highs getting back into the 70s and morning lows in the 50s – something much more typical of the middle of October.

A combination of the Pacific moisture from Hurricane Rick and a strong upper trough coming out of the Rockies will lead to rain chances beginning Thursday and continuing into Saturday. Right now it appears our best rain chance will come from Friday into Saturday. The rain and the front sweep through by early Sunday bringing Central Alabama another great Fall day.

No activity is currently going on in the tropical Atlantic, but Hurricane Rick poses a threat to northern Mexico by Wednesday. Rick will also contribute to moisture that will impact the Southeast late in the upcoming week.

Looking well ahead into voodoo country, the pattern seems to migrate a tad further north putting the southern tier of the US into a more zonal flow for several days around the end of October. But the GFS promises a strong trough coming out of the southern Rockies around November 2nd which could mean another substantial rain event for the South. This seems like a good solution in light of the development of El Nino.

STORM ALERT XTREME: Do you want to be trained as a storm spotter? Want to join the ABC 33/40 Skywatcher team? The annual training event, Storm Alert Xtreme, is coming up on Saturday November 14 at the BJCC during the annual Birmingham International Auto Show. I will be conducting a full storm spotter training session as I used to do while working for the National Weather Service. I encourage anyone interested in storm spotting to attend this every year; you simply cannot get enough training. Storm Alert Xtreme begins at 9:30 am and will end by 3:30 pm. And, everyone that attends Storm Alert Xtreme gets free admission to the Alabama International Auto Show. There is no admission charge, and no need to register. Just show up, but get there early for a good seat since there was a packed house last year.

Headed back to Helena later this morning after a wonderful reunion of NWS Memphis folks. About 60 current and former meteorologists that worked at NWS Memphis had a reunion yesterday organized by my good friends Jim Duke and Mike Looney. Special thanks to MIC Jim Belles and his staff for all their work in bringing this about. I hope you enjoy the day and the sunshine. Godspeed.
